After reckless young lawyer Gordon Bombay gets arrested for drunk driving, he must coach a kids hockey team for his community service. Gordon has experience on the ice, but isn't eager to return to hockey, a point hit home by his tense dealings with his own former coach, Jack Reilly. The reluctant Gordon eventually grows to appreciate his team, which includes promising young Charlie Conway, and leads them to take on Reilly's tough players.
Directed by Stephen Herek, this 1992 family sports comedy-drama follows a brash young lawyer sentenced to community service coaching a ragtag kids' hockey team. Reluctant at first and haunted by his own history with a hard-driving former coach, he gradually rediscovers the game and bonds with his underdog players. Warm, crowd-pleasing and built on classic redemption and teamwork beats, it balances rink-side comedy with heartfelt life lessons. Holding a MagicMovieScore of 6.6, it is ideal for family viewing and for fans of feel-good underdog sports stories where a reluctant mentor and a scrappy team grow together toward the big game.
