Terrence McDonagh is a New Orleans Police sergeant, who receives a medal and a promotion to lieutenant for heroism during Hurricane Katrina. Due to his heroic act, McDonagh injures his back and becomes addicted to prescription pain medication. He then finds himself involved with a drug dealer who is suspected of murdering a family of African immigrants.
Werner Herzog directs this fevered 2009 crime drama set in storm-ravaged New Orleans, following a decorated police lieutenant whose heroism leaves him injured, addicted to painkillers, and increasingly unmoored as he tangles with a drug dealer linked to a brutal killing. Equal parts gritty procedural and hallucinatory character study, the film charts a spiraling descent through corruption, compulsion, and moral chaos. The tone is unpredictable, darkly comic, and intensely off-kilter, bearing Herzog's singular sensibility. It appeals to viewers who appreciate bold, unconventional crime cinema and unhinged antihero portraits. The film holds a MagicMovieScore of 6.2.
