Upon his release from a mental hospital following a nervous breakdown, the directionless Anthony joins his friend Dignan, who seems far less sane than the former. Dignan has hatched a harebrained scheme for an as-yet-unspecified crime spree that somehow involves his former boss, the (supposedly) legendary Mr. Henry.
Wes Anderson's 1996 debut blends comedy, crime, and drama in a deadpan caper about two aimless friends who hatch an absurdly elaborate plan for a crime spree. Fresh from a breakdown, one drifts along while the other plots with misplaced confidence, dragging them toward schemes far beyond their abilities. Dry, offbeat, and quietly affectionate, the film finds humor and melancholy in misfit ambition, friendship, and the gap between grand plans and reality. Its tone is wry and idiosyncratic. It will reward viewers who enjoy indie comedies, low-key crime stories, and character-driven films about lovable dreamers. MagicMovieScore: 6.7.
