Fourteen years after Third Impact, Shinji Ikari awakens to a world he does not remember. He hasn't aged. Much of Earth is laid in ruins, NERV has been dismantled, and people who he once protected have turned against him. Befriending the enigmatic Kaworu Nagisa, Shinji continues the fight against the angels and realizes the fighting is far from over, even when it could be against his former allies. The characters' struggles continue amidst the battles against the angels and each other, spiraling down to what could inevitably be the end of the world.
Part of the reimagined Evangelion saga, this 2012 animated science-fiction drama, directed by Hideaki Anno and collaborators, picks up years after a cataclysm, with its young protagonist waking to a transformed and hostile world. As old alliances dissolve and a new companion appears, the story plunges into questions of guilt, isolation, and apocalyptic dread. Combining mecha action with psychological intensity, it offers dense, emotionally charged storytelling. Best suited to anime fans and those already invested in the series' mythology, it rewards engaged viewing. The film carries a MagicMovieScore of 7.2.
